Automation, PDF and the fax machines: Click here.
When I was working at a bank in the 1990's, we were asked often as young bank officers if there was anything we thought could help improve our work experience; in addition to more money of course. There may have been several suggestions such as ensuring the blinds were open for sufficient sunshine during the winter or using reference fields on all written communications to ensure faster responses from colleagues around the world. Eventually, it would help auto matching in Reconciliation of all payments and contracts with reference numbers used on a mandatory basis on all wire transfers or else you can't send it. I had also proposed paperless rendering of fax communications as the information to be printed as transmitted and stored on the machine is a digital image; digital information. The idea was to render the digital image on the screen once received without needing to print it and it could also be stored electronically in the related file. This was certainly available on any 1990's home computer enabled with a fax modem with a phone line and number and fax program from Microsoft where your fax message would be stored first on the machine. You could view it without printing it. This work proposal for work purposes in the last decade operated on a network without fax modems but a telephone line and fax number was still involved. It became very popular in our service and today, we use email with pdf or JPG attachments in a kind of automation of the document communication process. The proposals rested on existing technologies.
